received word that they will
be allowed to emigrate from
the Soviet Union in
November. In a letter to
Jason, Alexander also said
he will observe his bar mitz-
vah in Leningrad.
The Proekt family first ap-
plied for permission to
emigrate in March 1989.
They were refused on
grounds that Mark Proekt
had been exposed to state
secrets during the two years
he had worked at the In-
stitute of Radio Communica-
tions 12 years earlier. He
had not had access to any
classified material since
then. Mark Proekt now
works for a small company
that repairs computers and
makes computer programs.
