Pad Refuseniks Still Seek Permission To Emigrate
While the number of Jews
leaving the Soviet Union has
increased significantly in recent
months, there are many refuseniks,
those who had applied for
permission to leave the country but
were denied, whose status has
remained unchanged.
During a recent visit to the
Soviet Union, Eli and Joanna
Berger of West Bloomfield met
several. They offer the following
information and encourage your
sending them good wishes and
letters of support:
Gersh Belitsky was an engineer
until he applied for an exit visa. He
now works as a caretaker in the
Paneria Memorial Forest in Vilnius.
His reapplication for permission to
leave was denied again in June.
Additionally, the Bergers suggest
that letters of support to Congress
might help Gersh's cause. He can

a cardio-vascular surgeon whose
requests to leave have been turned
down several times. His entire
family wants to leave, including his

2 eggs
1 1/2 c. pumpkin
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 c. raisins
1 c. chopped nuts
Glaze
2 Tbs. margarine
2 c. powdered sugar
2 Tbs. lemon juice
1-2 Tbs. water
Mix dry ingredients together.
Add the remaining ingredients, and
stir well. Drop by teaspoonful onto
greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375
degrees for 12-15 minutes. Mix the
glaze ingredients together, and
glaze cookies while still warm.
Apple Fruit Roll
Ingredients
Ingredients
4 c. chopped apple, with peel
1/4 C. honey
2 Tbsps. lemon juice
2 tsps. mixed spices (cinnamon,
cloves, nutmeg)
21/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 /2 tsp. baking soda
1 /2 tsp. salt
1 /2 tsp. each cinnamon, nutmeg,
ginger
1 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
Combine apples with enough
water to make thick applesauce in
blender or food processor. Add
honey, lemon juice, spices. Coat a
cookie sheet with vegetable spray.
Spread apple mixture evenly on
sheet. Bake at 150 degrees 6 to 8
hours. Leave oven door open a
crack. Roll up and slice.
