"We were playing Scranton, which had future major leaguers like Mel Parnell and Maury McDermott," he recalled with relish. "Second place was at stake. The night before, 500 came to the game. "That night, there were 6,000 there, including my parents. I pitched my heart — and my arm — out and we won. "Afterwards, my teammates crowded around: 'What did they give you?' they kept ask- ing. I told them: 'They gave me . . . my release as a player." Patkin made his major league comedy debut on an auspicious occasion in. Cleveland's 80,000-seat stadium: The honoring of Hall-of-Famers Babe Ruth, ay Cobb and Tris Speaker. Remembered Patkin: "The Babe was dying of cancer and could hardly talk then. But he borrowed someone's spikes, rolled up his pants legs and tried to hit one out of the park. "He hit some singles, but a lot of pop-ups too. He just didn't have the strength to hit home runs any more. "There wasn't a dry eye in the place. I went out to do my two innings, wondering, 'Am I really that funny?' " He obviously was. His next appearance came when the Detroit Tigers played Cleveland and Tiger star Hank • Greenberg — very, very serious guy" — told Maxie, "Go ahead, kid, I'll be your stooge." Patkin continued: "So he kept his foot on first base during infield drills and I pretended to give him a hot foot. He jumped up and down, grabbed me by the shirt and picked me up — all 150 pounds of me — and shook ma" Other stars that he played with and against in the Navy also downed with him, like Joe DiMaggio, Phil Rizzuto and Ted Williams. Nowadays, Patkin bemoans the lack of major league pro- spects on every team's roster, as in the old days, and the lack of Jewish players. "I make a joke about it in some of my appearances," he explained. "I say, the Jewish players don't want to ride the buses — they want to own the buses! "I think they're smarter than the Jewish athletes of my day. They realize how hard it is to make it to the big leagues; they know about the long bus rides and the other hardships. "Most of them can afford to go to college. We couldn't; we were dummies who lived for sports?' ❑ B'nai B'rith Bowling Results Eight 600 series were roll- ed Sept. 25 in the Brother- hood/Eddie Jacobson League of the B'nai B'rith Bowling Association, the most in the league's 29-year history.
