Baseball Comic Patkin
Says 'Durham' Helped
HARLAN C. ABBEY
Special to The Jewish News
M
ax Patkin, the tall,
skinny, loose-limbed
baseball comedian,
has been cavorting on major
and minor league diamonds
for some 55 years.
But he admits his- featured
role in last summer's hit
baseball movie Bull Durham,
starring Kevin Costner and
Susan Sarandon, enabled him
to get "more jobs and at a lit-
tle higher price" this year.
"I'm getting the recognition
now that any performer
would like," he said during a
recent appearance for the
minor-league Niagara Falls,
N.Y., Rapids.
Patkin, who'll be 70 next
year, admits, "I'm feeling a
little burned out . . . nearing
the end, but not ready to quit
yet. Making people laugh
isn't a bad way to earn a liv-
ing."
A Philadelphia native,
Patkin was serious about pit-
ching when he started his
coaching box comedy in the
Navy during World War II.
But after five years in the
minors, and the beginning of
a sore arm, comedy routines
became important, he said.
"The president of the
Wilkes Barre, Pa., team took
me to an exhibition game at
Harrisburg, with the local
minor league team playing
the Cleveland Indians.
"lb be frank, I was a little
unhappy that he didn't think
more of me as a pitcher. But
I went out and did my
routines and the crowd went
nuts.
"Bill Veeck, Cleveland's
owner, signed me to a con-
tract. I should have saved it;
it would be worth a lot to col-
lectors today: The lowest con-
tract in baseball history, $1
per year.
