of an attempt to help improve
cotton production, which
takes up 10 percent of the ir-
rigated land in Israel.
Researchers Yigal Henis, Il-
an Chet and Mark Platt were
looking for a way to break
down the woody constituents
of cotton straw left over after
the seeds and fiber are remov-
ed from the cotton, so that it
could be used as animal feed.
When other approaches fail-
ed, the scientists decided to
grow oyster mushrooms on
the straw, assuming that the
mushrooms, being a fungus,
would dissolve its woody ele-
ment. The experiment was
successful, yielding cotton
straw that was readily
digestible by sheep and cattle,
as well as mushrooms that
people are more than pleased
to eat.
Meanwhile,
another
Hebrew University scientist,
Gadi Gvaryahu, has been
seeking to improve the
lifestyle of chickens. He found
that exposing them to
classical music and such
visual stimulants as plastic
toys, made them happier and
ensured that they gained
weight more rapidly than
fretful fowl.
Now the cooks, Jewish and
otherwise, will have to deter-
mine whether these cultural-
ly enriched chickens also
taste better. ❑

Nathan
Receives Prison
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Peace ac-
tivist Abie Nathan received
a six-month prison sentence
for meetings with Palestine
Liberation Organization
chief Yassir Arafat and
other PLO figures in Tunis
and Strasbourg last year.
Nathan is the first Israeli to
receive a prison term under
the 1986 law that bars con-
tact with the PLO.
Nathan said afterWard
that he would continue his
efforts to establish dialogue
with the Palestinians.
Judge Aharon Fass said he
imposed a stiff sentence
because the accused, a public
personality, should be made
an example to deter others
from breaking the law.
Right-wing nationalists
complained that the
sentence was too light. The
Association of Victims of
Terrorism accused Nathan
of encouraging the PLO and
other terrorists to continue
their murder of Jews.
But members of the leftist
Mapam and the Citizens
Rights Movement promised
redoubled efforts to get the
law amended.
