Truth Or
Consequences?

On last Sunday's New
York Times' op-ed page, a
confession of journalistic and
ethnic agonizing: Hal
Wyner, an American Jew
who corresponds from Israel
for West German and Swiss
newspapers, endorsed full
reporting of Israeli troops'
brutality against Palesti-
nians, despite some Jews'
claims that such reportage
plays into the hands of those
who are anti-Semitic or anti-
Israel.
"Since anti-Semitism has
its roots not in the truth, but
in distortions of truth,"
wrote Wyner, "I do not see
how I can in any way do a
service to the Jewish people
by concealing or distorting
the truth when it comes to
Israel." ❑
