Educators went to the head of the class this year.

Both the Berman Award, which honors professionalism

in Jewish communal service, and the new Schochet
Award, acknowledging excellence in Jewish education,

have gone to teachers in Detroit Jewish schools.

Between them, Nira Lev and Leah Kar have taught in

day and afternoon schools, as well as adult classes, for
more than 45 years. Their students give them the high-
est grades for devotion, creativity and vision—for instilling

cherished Jewish values and perpetuating a sense of

peoplehood.

The Outstanding Professional Service Award was en-

dowed by Mandell and Madeleine Berman, and the
Outstanding Teacher Award by the family of Frank and

Freda Schochet.
