Dr. Yuri Reshetov, chief of
the Soviet Foreign Min-
istry's Department of Hu-
manitarian and Cultural Re-
lations.
Speaking to the 18th an-
nual leadership assembly of
the National Conference on
Soviet Jewry, Reshetov said
that the resolution "was
mainly understood" as con-
demning "the practices of a
certain state," a reference to
Israel.
Abraham Foxman, na-
tional director of the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith, told Reshetov that
his reply was "very disillu-
sioning and disquieting."

Peres Defends
Deportations

Washington (JTA) -- Israeli
Vice Premier Shimon Peres
recently defended Israel's
policy of deporting Palesti-
nian instigators of violence
in the administered ter-
ritories, saying the practice
is a means of avoiding capi-
tal punishment.
"From deportations you
can come back," said Peres.
"From death we didn't see
people returning, even if the
government approves."
He noted that despite five
wars and the constant threat
of terrorism during Israel's
40 years, the government
has only executed one man:
Adolph Eichmann, the noto-
rious commander of the Nazi
SS.
The vice premier spoke
about the ,death penalty in
response to a question posed
during his appearance at the
National Press Club.

bassador to the United States

ing concern in the wake of
reports that Rashid was plan-
ning to request that he be set

In December, B'nai B'rith
