man crew to a second-place
finish.
Now Harvard is preparing
for the "Head" series of
races, which begins Sunday
with the Head of The Con-
necticut, on the river of the
same name. The fall season
concludes with the Head of
The Charles on Oct. 22, the
largest regatta on the North
American continent, featur-
ing teams from around the
world. Next spring, the
Crimson will seek its third
straight national title and
sixth in the last eight years.
But for senior Bernstein,
believed to be the first Jew
to captain the Harvard row-
ing team, making the U.S.
Rowing Team is the
ultimate accomplishment so
far.
"It's a case of making the
U.S. Olympic rowing team
in a non-Olympic year," he
says. However, he notes also
that "it's a precursor to the
Olympics, but not a guar-
antee. Making it (the U.S.
team) one year doesn't mean
you'll make it the next
year."
Hopefuls face annual
tryouts. "I made it in a year
when people from last year's
Olympics in Seoul, Korea,
were taking time off. It's
much tougher to make the
team in Olympic years,
although that is my goal."
The Olympics —
"something that is a dream"
for him, he says — was a goal
as recently as the 1988
Games, • when he and an-
other rower went to the
Olympic Trials to seek a two-
man — or pairs — rowing
berth. They finished fourth.
"With a little bit of luck
and work — no, with a lot of
work, I should be able to
make it for the 1992 Olym-
pics in Madrid, Spain,"
Bernstein says.
