drapery boye tiqup Custom Draperies The British, inevitably, were the first ones to in- troduce the game to the Holy Land and, during the British Mandate of Palestine, the troops billeted in Jerusalem regularly partook in its sub- tle pleasures. The game kept going until the early '60s. Then, in 1967, in the wake of the Six-Day War, a flood of immigrants reached Israel's shores, in- cluding the late Ben Abrams of Bombay, who together with his 10 sons formed a complete team. Since those days, Israeli cricket has continued to thrive, although not surpris- ingly, it has never quite entered the mainstream of local sporting culture. Nowadays, Israel has 13 teams, with about 85 percent of the country's 200 or so cricketers being of Indian origin. The Jerusalem Cricket Club was rejuvenated last summer following a decade of "lounging in the beer tent," with the national team captain Stanley Pearl- man, a fine all-rounder, at the helm. Games are played under the shadow of the Knesset in the Hebrew University's Givat Ram Stadium. This year the national team will again face Great Britain, South Africa, India and pre- sent champions Australia (IC- SA), a group of fervent Zionist British cricketers, many of whom are members of Lon- don's Harrow Cricket Club. Field hockey was a popular sport in pre-State days, when mandatory personnel rubbed sticks with English members of the "Yishuv." The local game flourished for a number of years, with the inaugural hockey tournament being held at the 1951 Maccabiah. Within a few short years, however, the game fell into decline. Revived and reintroduced into the Maccabiah during the late 70s, field hockey numbers have again dwindl- ed and there doesn't appear to be a great deal of enthusiasm. Half-a-dozen bowls clubs already exist in the country, serving the sporting and social needs of nearly 1,000 members, to whom English is most definitely the lingua franca. With the financial help of Teddy Kollek's Jerusalem Foundation, the capital's own club should be ready to open its doors in time for July's Maccabiah. Beautifully situated in the Herzl forest, it will have only one green and about 40 members in the in- itial stage.
