PAIN RELIEF OINTMENT

THE ONLY FORMULA CONTAINING THE 30 MINERALS FROM THE WOLD FAMOUS
MEDICAL MINERAL SPRINGS OF MT. CLEMENS, MICH.

danian explanation — that
the soldiers are insane in-
dividuals acting on their
own — seems less and less
convincing. "These incidents
prove that part of the Jorda-
nian army isn't satisfied
with the quiet on our border,
and thinks that it needs to
cause us some trouble," said
Benny Shalita, a member of
Knesset who also heads the
town council of
Menachemiya, located near
the border.
The Jordanian army is
made up primarily of
Bedouins who have long
been considered loyal sup-
porters of King Hussein.
During the Jordanian civil
war of 1970, it was the
Bedouin troops who brutally
put down Palestinian
resistance to the king in the
country's towns and refugee
camps.
Recently, however, there
have been signs that the
Bedouins may be becoming
disenchanted with Hussein.
The primary reason appears
to be the faltering economy.
Since the beginning of the
oil recession, Jordanians are
no longer able to find work
in neighboring Gulf coun-
tries; and the government
has been unable to supply
jobs. At the beginning of the
year, there were food riots in
several Jordanian towns
which had to be put down by
force. Many many of the
rioters turned out to be
unemployed Bedouin from
tribes who were thought to
be most loyal to the king.
Some analysts believe that
the Syrians, who have a long
history of animosity toward
Jordan, would like to exploit
the king's perceived do-
mestic and economic
weakness by stirring up fur-
ther trouble for him along
his border.
"It is likely that the
Palestinian and Syrian at-
tacks from Jordanian ter-
ritory are aimed at weaken-
ing Hussein and drawing an
Israeli retaliatory response
that would weaken him even
more," says Avner Yaniv, a
professor of political science
at Haifa University.
For now, Israeli leaders
seem prepared to let King
Hussein deal with the situa-
tion — up to a point. "We are
watching things very, very
carefully," said a senior
Israeli official. "We're not
going to let the Jordanian
border deteriorate into an-
other Lebanon. "D
