JPM Study

Continued from Page 1

firms the need for something
to be done," said Allan
Nachman, chairman of the
Federation budget and
planning committee. "But I
don't know what our limita-
tions are because we must
take under consideration
other projects from other
agencies.
"Personally, I'd like to do
every single thing outlined
in the study," Nachman
said. "But we must be fair,
equal and appropriate for all
agencies."
The new construction and
renovations would be paid
for through fund-raising and
endowments. A membership
drive would be expected to
genei-ate a portion of the
dollars needed to cover the
expanded facility's addi-
tional operating expenses.
The Federation would be
called upon to provide the
balance of the funds needed.
JCC and Federation
leaders for years have talked
about enhancing the JPM
facility. But the JCC didn't
finalize any written pro-
posals until earlier this year.
During the review of that
proposal, the JCC and the
Federation agreed to hire an
outside consultant to assess
it. JCC Executive Director
Mort Plotnick said the study

cost between $5,000 and
$10,000.
"Our counterparts at the
Federation are in the process
of reviewing the study," JCC
President Richard Maddin
said. "It has been circulated
amongst its departments
and agencies. That is where
we are right now.
"I don't see this as a tug of
war between agencies,"
Maddin said. "Each agency
has a charge, and the Center
has a unique charge. The
proposal has been carefully
conceived and it makes a lot
of sense. I think it is
necessary." 0

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1989

New York — The Governing
Council of the American
Jewish Congress has asked
the U.S. government to "play
a more energetic and active
role in fighting the prolifera-
tion of political violence with
the immediate objective to
strengthen our defenses
against the transfer of arms
to terrorist groups and
organizations?
The resolution singled out
Iran and Syria as the main
sponsors of terrorist activity
and called upon the United
States "to take steps
reasonably calculated to in-
duce Teheran and Damascus
to terminate that sponsor-
ship."
