Israeli women, she con-
tends, are part of an "op-
pressive society" with a more
rigid way of thinking. Palesti-
nian women, she said, are
free from such "restraints."
Despite Dr. Mikhail-
Ashrawi's grim picture,
female politicians in Israel
feel that their limited role can
be attributed to the strong
emphasis Israeli society puts
on the masculine perspective.
"Israeli men think that
security and military
strategy can only be dealt
with by men," said Labor
Knesset member Ora Namir.
An all women's party runn-
ing in the next Knesset elec-
tions? Why not, says Masha
Lubelsky, Secretary-General
of Na'amat, an international
organization of Jewish
women affiliated with the
Labor party. Lubelsky is lob-
bying the Labor party to
change the party's constitu-
tion so that women will be
guaranteed 20 percent
representation on the party's
list.
She believes the situation
will change when women
start filling industrial roles in
Israeli society. If women
become major donors to elec-
tion campaigns women's
issues would receive higher
priority on the political par-
ties' agenda.
Another participant to the
conference, left-wing member
of Knesset Shulamit Aloni,
said that if given the chance,
women would be much more
effective peacemakers than
males. "Men are fascinated
by glory as part of their
manhood, a major component
in their eagerness to to to
war," she says. "Women have
a greater freedom of expres-
sion and are less inclined to
enter into power struggles."
The female role in politics,
at least in Israel, might even
serve as a bridge between the
left and right-wing ends of
the political spectrum.
Although having not attend-
ed the peace conference in-
Belgium, Knesset Member
Guela Cohen of the right-
wing Techyia party which
supports Jewish settlement
on the West Bank, mirrors
Aloni's view and says that
women have natural talents
for politics — diplomacy and
leadership qualities.
"What we lack in vision we
make up in practicality."
