FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1989

hen he was 7 years
old, Mark Shapiro,
son of Dr. Marshall
and Dee Shapiro, had to write
a school report . . . Mark used
to think the sun rose and
shone on Notre Dame . . . and
over his bed at home in
Southfield was a pennant of
the Fighting Irish . . . His
topic was the legendary Notre
Dame football coach Knute
Rockne.
Marshall asked why he had
the pennant and Mark said
that someday he would play
football at Notre Dame . . .
Dad told Mark he was a little
Jewish boy and to give up the
thought of ever playing there
. .. since it was a Catholic
school.
Recently, however, a part of
Mark's dream did come true
. .. He played at Notre Dame
stadium . . . on the Michigan
State special team as long
center for punts, field goals
and points-after.
Following the game, Mark
was upset that his Spartans
had lost to Notre Dame .. .
Marshall reminded him
about the pennant he used to
have over his bed . . . and
Mark smiled .. . The
yesteryear remembrance by
Dad had taken away some of
the losing sting.
Congrats . . . to Mark . . . on
his 22nd birthday . . . Mar-
shall and Dee travel with the
team for many of the games.
ALL KINDS of "coming
out" parties . . . Even one for
having the cast removed from
a broken foot . . . Over 70
friends of Ilene Monast
celebrated with dinner and
drinks at funfest given by
hubby Ben . . . happy to have
Ilene back on her two feet
again.
ANNUAL DONOR lun-
cheon by Woman's Auxiliary
of United Hebrew Schools is
Nov. 8, 12:15 p.m., at Con-
gregation Beth Achim . . .
Cantor Gail Hirschenfang is
slated as featured soloist .. .
Donors raise funds sending
UHS students to summer
camp, Israel summer pro-
gram, high school and college
study programs . . . plus ob-
taining books for the
Midrasha Library . . . For
reservations, call Anna
Mickel, 645-5237.
IT'S GETTING to be a
habit with Bob Feldman .. .
shooting holes-in-one . . . his
latest ho-hum on the golf
links was number 13 while
playing in the Par Golf

League at Fox Hills Country
Club.
Bob's recent one was on the
193-yard fifth hole using a
seven wood . . . and fore-
soming with Bernie
Schwartz, Ken Sutherland
and Les Levin-e.
In the span of three weeks,
Bob's golfing fortunes have
been a good bunch . . . He
qualified for the Oakland
County Parks Golf Cham-
pionship with rounds of 71
and 77 . . . and was also
number one medalist (low
man).

"Mommy, I don't
mind going to
Sunday school any
other day, but it
just spoils
Sundays."

Bob is 64 years old . . . and
25 to 30 years older than
anyone else who qualified.
But back to the holes-in-one
. . . He had two in 1962, 1968,
1987 and 1988 . . . and "just
one" in 1952, 1957, 1973,
1987 and this year . . . so far.
The 13 is far from a record
. . . and Bob still gets a big
thrill every time.
Wonder what people like
Phyllis Tyner, among others,
would give to get just a single
teensy-weensy little
hole-in-one?
MAIL DEPT. ... From
Delray Beach, Fla., Faye B.
Weiner writes . . . "Even dur-
ing the 90-plus days here, the
Michigan Club members
summoned enough energy to
celebrate the 75th birthday of
Carl Wolfe and 53rd anniver-
sary with his charming wife
Lil. Millie and Al Pick are
still relishing cooler days dur-
ing their Michigan vacation.
Evelyn and Al Diamond, for
whom a Detroit street was
named, are out west with
their family. More celebra-
tions for Belle Miller's
recovering from a broken hip
surgery. She climbs ladders at
75. Alfred and I spent a
gastronomical weekend in
Miami at the beach with the
Delray Chapter of ORT along
with 38, friends and
members:'

CHILDREN'S DEPT. ...

Little 6-year-old Myron
Glantz told mother, Susan
Glantz, "Mommy, I don't
mind going to Sunday school
any other day, but it just
spoils Sundays."
