for the young Ruth Alice (who
later became "Ronnie") to
claim music and theater as
her two main interests.
While attending night
school at New York Universi-
ty, Gilbert joined the Weavers
and brought her ringing con-
tralto voice to such famous
songs as "Tzena Tzena," "If I
Had a Hammer" and "Good-
night Irene." When the group
was blacklisted during the
hysteria of the McCarthy era,
Gilbert shifted gears into
other interests. She became a
mother of daughter Lisa, who
is now 35 and works as a
gardener in Berkeley.
Gilbert pursued an acting
career working with Joseph
Chaikin's Open Theater and
The Winter Project. She land-
ed roles in Harold Pinter's
Man in the Glass Booth on
Broadway, work by Peter
Brook in England and Paris,
Carol Churchill's recent Top
Girls in London, Ontario, and
experimental work by Sam
Shepard, Meredith Monk and
Elizabeth Swados.
For Gilbert, theater was a
natural interest. "Chaikin's
Open Theater was a group of
people doing some real ex-
ploring. That's what theater
is really about at its best," she
says with conviction. "It's
about asking the questions of
life and translating them in-
to viable theatrical forms."
This same questioning pro-
mpted Gilbert to enter primal
therapy and earn a degree in
clinical psychology. She went
on to work as a counselor and
therapist in California and
British Columbia. It wasn't
until 1980, 20 years after
leaving the Weavers, that
Gilbert was finally persuaded
to return to music by folk-
singer Holly Near. Since then
Gilbert has created a number
of albums, toured nationally
alone as well as with the
group HARP
Recently Gilbert agreed to
perform at a fundraising con-
cert for Congregation Sha'ar
Zahav in San Francisco
highlighting her continuing
search for the meaning
Judaism and spirituality play
in her life.
With such a rich past, it is
not surprising that Gilbert
has exciting plans for the
future. She will produce and
create a new album on her
own label, play Shakespeare
and take a stab at a new ven-
ture — writing.
In the interim, Gilbert
marks all her pursuits with a
questioning and probing in-
telligence. As Gilbert says of
her own evolving Jewishness,
"I don't know what form it
will take for me. It's a search
and I keep asking lots of ques-
tions."
