SELMA & PHYLLIS KORN 90 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1989 Year card written in Hebrew, English and Korean. A melange of traffic signs, with Jewish sayings in Hebrew and English, such as "Guard Your Ibngue," or "Love the Torah," offers a "lighter look" at the spirit of Jewish life to- day in North America and in Israel. My Very Own Jewish Calendar, by Kar-Ben Copies, will charm parents as much as children. Prepared by Judyth Groner and Madeline Wikler, it is a veritable cor- nucopia of fun and informa- tion. There are historical tid- bits, anecdotes, stories, trivia, cooking projets and activities to involve and challenge the child's curiosity, intelligence and energies throughout the year. Each month has a full page of illustrations and informa- tion on various topics of Jewish interest, such as the origins of the Star of David, kosher symbols, Jewish customs, traditions and a musical score for a Yiddish children's song. For practical individuals, Kar-Ben Copies also produces a jumbo Jewish calendar that doubles as a desk pad or wall organizer. It has abundant writing space, and is ideal for the home or the office. Happily, whatever your preference, wall, pocket or desk, there is a wider selec- tion of Jewish calendars than ever before. ❑ Donors Sought By Magazine San Francisco (JTA) — The publisher and editor of Tik- kun are seeking money to keep the 3-year-old Oakland- based Jewish magazine afloat. The new funding strategy was announced in the September-October issue, distributed recently. Pub- lisher Nan Fink asks the bimonthly's estimated 40,000 subscribers to become "Tik- kun associates" — donors willing to contribute from $100 to $1,000 per year to erase a $350,000 annual deficit. In the past, the bulk of that deficit has been covered by the magazine's parent organization, the non-profit Oakland-based Institute for Labor and Mental Health, which is funded by Fink and her husband, Tikkun editor Michael Lerner. "We knew from the start we couldn't go on personally fun- ding the magazine indefinite- ly," says Lerner. The two in- sist it has nothing to do with their separation and impen- ding divorce. <
