I
t is early morning in
Rakefet. Waves of chil-
dren's laughter can be
heard from the nearby
regional school. Ostriches are
strutting about impatiently
in their pens, waiting to be
fed. The office telephone rings
and Ariel Frankus picks it up.
"Rakefet Holiday Village," he
says amiably. "Yes, we take
groups at the swimming pool,
and yes, we sell popsicles."
Rakefet, is as shy as the
local wildflower it is named
-after, cyclamen. While most of
the new Jewish settlements
in western Galilee are boldly
perched in hilltops, Rakefet is
tucked away in a tranquil
valley. The eight-year old
village is home to 13 families.
Its goal is to attract 200.

In Rakefet members work
in the holiday village, jewelry
factory, ostrich farm and
greenhouse. The opening of a
swimming pool was the event
of the summer. The new year ci
will bring another change.
Founded as a "moshav
shitufi," where communal in-
come income is shared among
members, as in a kibbutz,
Rakefet is changing to a com-
munity settlement, where
each family will be responsi-
ble for its own income.
Ariel Frankus, originally
from Chile, set up and
presently runs the holiday
village. Ariel, his wife and
four children immigrated to
Israel three years ago and
have integrated very well in-
to the life of the community.
"In Chile," he says, "I was
president of the United
Jewish Appeal, always pro-
moting aliyah, expecially to
the Galilee." Frankus, no
stranger to the tourist
business, has a master's
degree in business and
studied hotel management at
a Holiday Inn.
Most of the visitors to the
holiday village are Israelis.
Some come for the music and
dance festivals which take
place in Galilee, others simp-
ly to get away from it all in
the peaceful, hilly country.
Occasionally there are
overseas visitors, such as the
kester group from Denver,
Colorado, which has visited
three times, to "see Israel
