dark past, we rejoice at the
changed fortune of the Jewish
people since 1948, when
given keys to our country,
Eretz Israel, we became the
masters of our own destiny.
Despite the difficulty in
4. creating and maintaining our
state, it is the unique
privilege of our generation,
and those who will succeed
us, to build, develop and pro-
vide security for all future
generations of Jewish people.
With the growing violence
and genocide directed against
the Christian community of
Lebanon, we take pride in our
ability to remain an island of '
stability and democracy.
The two elections held in
Israel this year, for. the
Knesset and the local coun-
cils, demonstrated democracy
in action. It is a tribute to our
electorate and the nation's
leaders that, despite ongoing
political differences, we were
able to create the second
government of National Uni-
ty. This government gives us
the capacity to deal, with in-
creasing effectiveness, with
internal unity and with the
other challenges that face us.
We hope that the New Year
will bring greater resolution
with respect to our peace in-
itiative. Arab countries must
abandon their 41-year state of
war against Israel and
recognize that existence. We
hope, too, that leaders will
emerge among our country's
Arab population, with whom
we shall be able to negotiate
an agreement based upon the
principles outlined in our
peace initiative.
We hope that the trickle of
people making Aliyah from
the Soviet Union turns into a
raging flood of thousands
longing to return home. Jews
throughout the world should
encourage those leaving the
Soviet Union to choose Israel
as their future home and
work towards integrating
them successfully. To ensure
that, we must provide
suitable housing and jobs for
them all. This is a historic op-
portunity that must not be
lost through default on our
part.
The year 5750 has been
designated the "year of Ivrit,"
to celebrate 100 years since
the revival of the Hebrew
language. Let us resolve to
make it a year of intensive
study, Jewish education, and
learning Ivrit, all of which
would strengthen the world's
bonds with Eretz Israel.
From Yerushalayim, I send
greetings and heartfelt
wishes to all of you, that the
New Year 5750 will bring us
peace, security, a great Aliyah
and economic progress.
