Shamir's New
Year's Message
This Rosh Hashanah our
thoughts go back 50 years
when Jews observed the
festival for the first time dur-
ing World War II. During
those dark days, all civilized
nations viewed the future
with uncertainty, but the
very existence of the Jewish
people was being threatened.
Millions of our people were
trapped in Europe and, in the
subsequent five years,
became the principal victims
of an extended period of
brutality and inhumanity.
Throughout the Shoah they
hoped desperately that the
terrible war might end quick-
ly, but it was not to be. Five
excruciating years passed
before the forces of evil were
destroyed.

Yitzhak Shamir
World War II was initiated
by reckless leaders filled with
territorial ambition and delu-
sions of power. Despite the
stark realities they succumb-
ed to violent dictates and em-
barked on a policy of appease-
ment, which proved futile and
fatal. Our hope is that the
world's leaders have learned
that such policies are a for-
mula for war.
In recalling the despair and
anguish of Jews in the
Holocaust, we must never
forget their heroism in the
face of massed power and
destruction. We pay tribute to
the valiant partisans and the
1,400,000 Jewish soldiers,
from many nations, who serv-
ed in the Allied armies which
ultimately crushed the in-
humane aggressors. We must
also remember that our peo-
ple, who succeeded in fleeing
the slaughterhouse of Europe,
were denied entry by most
countries and that, in Eretz
Israel, the gates were shut by
the White Paper Policy of
1939.
