WE RE FIGHTING FOR YOUR L IFE American Heart Association Endless Commitments Continued from Page 2 Masoch (1836-1895), who described it. It is an aber- ration freely practiced by Jews the world over. When other nations are under at- tack, their repsective coun- trymen, no matter what their internal differences, rally united around the flag until the crisis is over. Not so with Israel and the Jewish people. Too many Diaspora Jews, albeit a small minority, lash out with public expressions of self-criticism and self- admonition when Israel is besieged. Among such breast-beaters, we even find such illustrious names as Woody Allen, Richard Dreyfus and many others. Despite a marked lack of firt-hand knowledge from the field of action, these "masochists" are easily in- fluenced. They are frightened by a 'bad press, `those ugly pictures on the TV screen night after night, and by what they perceive as hostile world It provides justification to those most- vociferously anti-Israel. public opinion. Their knee- jerk reaction is immediate- ly to call Israel to task, in- stead of to support the Jewish state in its time of need. And, while most of their misguided criticism may be offered in good faith, its end result is to `give comfort to the enemy' by lending credence to its false moral position. It pro- vides justification to those non-Jews most vociferous in their anti-Israel at- titudes. 'After all, they can say, 'listen to what the Jews themselves are saying. Do we have to be more Catholic than the pope?' — or, more aptly in this case, `more Jewish than the chief rabbi?' Merely resorting to such ad- monitions is saddening. They must be acknowledged if there is to be any action to assure protection for Israel. This is one of the soul sear- ching lessons needed for the new year 5750. It is needed for the strengthening of con- fidence toward the ac- cumulating duties and the causes assured of Jewish loyalty. It is with a sense of con- fidence in an era always to be assured of courage and elimination of fears or sub- mission to defeat that this faith on a peoplehood rooted in unity will be given assurance as we exchange salutations on the new year. ❑ The Immorality Of Our Sinners w e are constantly af- fected by the nega- tives appended to our serious concerns that always relate to the tradi- tional aspirations. The horrors involved in the drug escapades also have dragged us into notoriety. We are not saints and we have our sinners. In a cabled report from Jerusalem to The New York Times, which was titled "Jerusalem Is Worried by Reports of Israeli Mercenaries in Colombia," Joel Brinkley included this paragraph: Meir Amit, former head of Mossad, Israel's in- telligence service, said of the Klein case: "The greatest damage is that, rather than being known as producers in agricul- ture, in genetics, in medicine, our trademark is now in the security business, whether it be weapons or support systems." Every misconduct by a Jew is cause for regret. While it is not expected that all in any group be tzadikim and measure up to sainthood, unlawfulness is deplorable. When violation, as in this case of involvement in drug deals, is rejected and highest ethical codes are emphasized, there is something to boast about. It is not all bad in Israel's record. ❑ Funny, If Not So Venemous A n editorial note in the Wall Street Journal could be treated as humorous had it not been ex- posed by ignorance and couched in venom. The WSJ commented: We're delighted that the State Department is taking a tough line toward something that calls itself the World Tourism Organ- ization in Paris. The WTO, it seems, is contemplating the admission of "Pales- tine," a creation of the Palestine Liberation Or- ganization, to membership and State rightly objects. We're not sure why tourists would want to go to this Palestine, even if it exited, since where the PLO exists there always seems to be trouble.
