Call The Jewish News L,PJ lel Aviv (JTA) — The sale of durable goods in Israel declin- ed sharply during the first six months of the year, indicating that Israel's economic slowdown is continuing. According to figures published this month by the Central Bureau of Statistics, automobile sales were down by 51 percent, compared to the same period of 1988. The sale of television sets was off by 18 percent, washing machine sales dropped 8 per- cent and videotape recorders were down 25 percent. Only air conditioner sales boomed, rising by 17 percent, as a result of unusually hot weather. 354.6060 Los Angeles (JTA) — The American-Israeli Chamber of Commerce has shut down operations, citing lack of in- terest and support from the Israeli government and business community. Established 35 years ago, the chamber functioned as a non-governmental organiza- tion, "fostering American- Israel commercial activities," said Yona Tal, the chamber's last executive vice president. At its peak, the chamber had some 350 members, but numbers declined as original supporters retired. According to Irwin Goldenberg, president of the chamber, appeals for help were sent "to all the impor- tant people in Israel . . . and the answer was zippo." "Although the Israeli government and business community frequently utiliz- ed our many services and resources they were unwilling to support the organization," said Tal. "With our closing," he added, "Israeli officials will now have to do all the detail work we did by themselves." Commerce Dinner To Honor Many The American-Israel Chamber of Commerce of Michigan will hold its annual dinner meeting 6:30 p.m., Oct. 16, at the Novi Hilton. Doug Ross, former director of the Michigan Department of Commerce and Larry Meyer, the director-designate, Michigan Department of Commerce, will be honored. Israel trade awards will be presented to Morton L. Feldman, chairman of the board; Raymond Palmer, Mark S. Kahn, Michael McDermott and Larry Crockett. A special youth award will be presented Deborah Carp, Liz Greenberg, David Pollack and Rob Weiss. There is a charge. For infor- mation call Shelly Komer Jackier, 661-1948.
