Long before the war, the
editor of a prominent Jewish
newspaper in Berlin had ask-
ed me to write a series of ar-
ticles about Jewish organiza-
tions and Jewish leaders in
other countries. The idea was
to acquaint those German
Jews who would go to those
countries with the organiza-
tional set-up and the leading
figures in their new
surroundings.
For personal reasons, I had
to interrupt publication for a
few weeks. Adolf Eichmann,
the notorious Gestapo
- 0 criminal in charge of Jewish
Affairs, asked the editor
when I would continue my
series.
The fact that he was in-
terested in my articles show-
ed that the Gestapo was com-
piling facts and figures to be
used beyond the German
borders. All I could do at that
point was to stop writing
about Jews in the countries
bordering on Germany and
concentrate instead on
Jewish life in Australia and
South American countries.
It is interesting to recall
now how Allied intelligence
could have interpreted many
events in the right manner if
they had watched what the
Nazis did to the Jews even
before the war broke out.
When the Jews of the Baltic
coast were evacuated, it was
an indication that the Nazis
were planning a move to the
north, to Denmark and Nor-
way. Similarly, before the war,
when the Jews in areas
bordering on Poland were
shipped to other places, it was
not hard to guess that a move
against Poland was in the
offing.
The Jews were expendable
and their extermination con-
tinued at a rapid pace. The
railway lines leading to
Auschwitz were never bomb-
ed — the area was out of reach
of American warplanes, the
men in the War Department
claimed.
But these same men could
order the Air Force to bomb
factories five miles from the
concentration camp. Jewish
leaders in this country
swallowed it all. They did not
want to hamper the war
effort.
That September I brought
countless tragedies, enough
to fill the history books
forever, enough to be called by
Jews the beginning of the
end.
Since that day, the world
around us changed and
changed forever. Not only the
maps of the world changed.
The • moral climate in the
world has never been the
same. It is still influenced by
the legacy the Nazis left.
