It is the one place, and the only place, with which almost all Jews all over the world identify, for which they care. Jews in New York scarcely realize that there are Jews, in great numbers, in Sao Paolo, Johannesburg, and Sydney, and, for their part, Jews in those outlying areas take little interest in what happens in American Jewry. But everyone, everywhere, cares about Jerusalem and the State of Israel. In that fundamental and necessary sense, the vision orJerusalem as the center of the Jewish world is realized in our hearts and sentiment. But, is Jerusalem the source of important ideas, those that make sense of the Jewish condition throughout the world and explain to Jews in the here and now who they are and what they are and why? I think not. In all the Jewish world, who reads a great work of philosophy of Judaism, written in Jerusalem? And what vast audiences throughout the Diaspora fill halls to hear the word of Jerusalem's sages and scholars? There are no books of more than routine academic interest coming from Jerusalem (and, in the area of Jewish studies, few enough of those), and the last great masters, figures of moral authority throughout the Jewish world, coming to us from Jerusalem have now died. Ray Kook among the religious, David Ben Gurion among the secular, and Mar- tin Buber among the philosophical — none of these moral authorities finds a counterpart today. Apart from some local celebrities such as Adin Steinsaltz, Jerusalem is utterly without influence on the intellectual life of the Diaspora. Proof is that sholar- ship printed in the United States from Jerusalem con- sists, these days, of reprints of works published 20 to 40 years ago. That means Jerusalem has nothing new to say.
