The appeal, signed by
editors, writers, philoso-
phers and Marek Edelman,
former commander of the
Jewish resistance in the
Warsaw Ghetto, stresses
that Auschwitz is "the sym-
bol of the Shoah."

Program Helps
Rabbi Shortage

New York (JTA) — A na-
tional shortage of Reform rab-
bis has inspired a two-week
program for lay-volunteers by
the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations.
It is believed to be the first
of its kind by any
denomination.
Fifteen men and women
between the ages of 29 and
62, including lawyers, ex-
ecutives, teachers and social
workers who are active in
Reform synagogues, were
trained to perform rabbinical
duties under simulated
conditions.
Rabbi Daniel Syme, vice
president of UAHC, said the
program was so successful it
would become an annual
event and that next summer's
class would be doubled in size.

Jerusalem (JTA) — The four
front seats — two to a side —
of all inter-urban buses will
hencefort be reserved for
soldiers, policemen or other
security personnel, the
Transport Ministry ordered
this week.
The purpose is to avoid a
repeat of the July 6 disaster,
when an Arab passenger
seated behind the driver seiz-
ed the wheel of a Jerusalem-
bound Egged bus, sending it
plunging into a ravine where
it burst into flames. Sixteen
passengers died and 27 were
injured.
