political as well as intellec-

fected, all at the expense of

themselves as defenders of
Israel.
In general, throughout the
world, anti-Semitism hasn't
stopped; in fact it has in-
creased. In France, Jean-

Marie Le Pen scandalously
repeated his claim of the

"International Jewish Con-
spiracy." The movie direc-
tor, Claude Autant-Lara,
provoked outrage with his
vulgar, anti-Semitic state-
ments, so much so that he
had to resign from the Euro-
pean Parliament and from
his position as vice chairman
of the Academie des Beaux-
Arts. Shortly afterward, a
left-wing Christian writer,
Jean-Marie Domenach,
shocked many Jewish and
non-Jewish intellectuals
with his accusation that
"some Jews" have drawn
"dividends from
Auschwitz." The banaliza-
tion of the tragedy has thus
been followed by that of the
debate on the tragedy. In
Italy anti-Semitic slogans
and views have been found
in various publications. An-
ti-Jewish works still sell well
in Japan. In the Soviet

perestroika, Pamyat (an
unofficial Russian right-
wing group whose name
means "memory") doesn't
hide its hatred of all that's
Jewish. In Moslem regions,
many Jews live in fear.
But most worrisome is the
deterioration of our relation-
ship- with the Catholic
Church. Ecumenicism, be-
gun by the revered John
XXIII, is no longer what it
used to be. Grave dangers
threaten it. Bitterness and
resentment follow the en-
thusiasm and hope of former
times. What has happened
to the great spiritual mes-
sage of John XXIII? De-
spite the efforts of our
Christian friends and allies,
