Composer/conductor Leo-
nard Bernstein, himself a
• social activist, helped right a
wrong by inviting Ian to per-
'form "Society's Child" on his
1966 television show, "Inside
the Pop Revolution."
The revolution came full
circle. With the imprimatur of
television and the patriarchal
Bernstein, society seemed to
adopt "Society's Child" as its
own; the record soon shot to
the top of the charts.
"The record did triumph,"
n recalls a still jubilant Ian. "It
gave me faith again in peo-
ple."
She just had to keep the
faith in herself. "I changed, I
• moved away to California and
lived there alone. I stopped
performing for four years,"
she says. "I wasn't sure
anymore what I had to say."
__, Not that people weren't
/ willing to listen. When Ian re-
emerged with a new album,
she found fame for the hav-
ing. In 1975, two years after
the release of her album
"Stars," which included the
cut "Jesse," Ian recorded "At
Seventeen."
Recorded at 24, "At Seven-
teen" scratched a seven-year
itch for singer/pianist/guitar-
ist Ian, whose single about
single teens facing the truth
of dateless Saturday nights
and imagined romances not-
ched another No. 1 hit for the
performer.
Ian soon hit on the notion
that maybe what she had to
offer was important after all.
"As a songwriter, I believe
you are born with certain
gifts, and you're responsible ,
to make use of them," she
says.

Part of her gift, Ian says, is
1, , wrapped up in the way she
' wants to deal with social
issues. "I have problems
i writing a basic love song" she
admits. "It's taken me long
enough to reconcile myself to
that."
Ian sounds comfortable
with herself once again, put-
ting away past troubles with
L health, a failed marriage and
taxing IRS problems. She is
cheered by audiences rooting
for the recording star rooted
in social ethics.
Ian is no one-note per-
former; her concerns trans-
cend nationalities.

ple who already agree with
you," she says in explanation
of her South African tour
with an integrated band. "I
wanted to change some
minds."
