hires out the services of its
choral group, the Gevatron.
Visitors used to flock to the
kibbutzim to witness the
Shevuot harvest festival with
its colorful agricultural sym-
bolism, and the little children
appropriately crowned and
garbed. This year, Kibbutzim
Shefayim staged the show
five times in one day, and ad-
missions were sold for each
performance.
At least two kibbutzim have
lawyer members who operate
law firms and give legal ad-
vice — all income to the
kibbutz.
Haifa has of late felt the
shortage of unskilled
workers, as Arab laborers
have become undependable.
The kibbutzim have stepped
into the breech. Young people,
between high school and ar-
my, are now available as
street cleaners, garbage col-
lectors and municipal
gardeners. After regular
hours, they also find employ-
ment doing housecleaning —
again, all income to the
kibbutz.
Some kibbutzim are think-
ing in terms of meeting
another social need by setting
up retirement homes on their
grounds.
Heavily burdened by debt,
the kibbutzim are seeking
help from the government
and mercy from the banks,
but no one can say that they
are not doing their best to
earn an honest living by pro-
viding services the market
wants. Perhaps the kibbutz is
no longer what it used to be,
but its ability to adapt, and
even to compete, with private
enterprise is evidence enough
that those who have been
predicting its early demise
are poor prophets. El

No AIDS Test,
No Marriage

New York (JTA) — The Rab-
binical Council of the Syrian
and Near Eastern Jewish
Community will no longer
perform any marriage
without medical proof that
both parties don't have AIDS.
The Brooklyn-based council
is the first rabbinical authori-
ty to impose such a regula-
tion, but speculated that
others would follow suit.
The regulation, which went
into effect Sept. 1, requires a
doctor's letter stating that the
bride and groom have testd
negative for Acquired Im-
mune Deficiency Syndrome
before Sephardic rabbis will
consider performing the
ceremony.
