Times have changed.
Mishmar Ha-Emek, one of
the flagships of Hashomer
Hatzair, figured that if urban
dwellers are willing to spend
a lot of money at a nightclub,
why not give them one on the
kibbutz grounds, in aesthetic
surroundings? So they sold
tickets for a jolly night of
entertainment, drinks, music,
dancing and refreshments.
The event was not too suc-
cessful, but some have sug-
gested expanding the idea by
utilizing the kibbutz's
facilities, like the swimming
pool, tennis courts, gym-
nasium, horses, etc. as a coun-
try club, where memberships
are sold to urban dwellers. It
should augment considerably
the income produced by corn,
carrots and cows.
Kibbutz Misgav-Am
has opened a pub
for city beer-
drinkers looking
for a different kind
of atmosphere.
The kibbutzim are now out-
doing each other. Kfar
Hanassi has set up all the
paraphernalia of a gambling
casino, and rents out the
equipment for organizations
and parties — only 200
shekels a night.
A number of kibbutzim pro-
vide the locale for weddings
and bar mitzvah parties. They
offer attractive surroundings,
catering, and plenty of park-
ing space. Some kibbutzim
now provide catering from
their large kitchens for in-
dustrial plants and institu-
tions. The same goes for their
large-scale laundry services.

drinkers looking for a dif-
ferent kind of atmosphere.
One kibbutz rents out fishing
tackle for use in its own
domestic pools, after the com-
mercial crop has been hauled
in. Usha offers a summer
school for kids weak in
mathematics. Mishmar
Hasharon rents picnic
grounds for barbecue parties.
Saar exploits the interests
and talents of one member,
and has now set up a full-
scale music recording studio,
which comes with room and
board as necessary.
Up in the Galilee, Kfar
Blum conducts an annual
Chamber Music Week, which
has become one of the coun-
try's major musical events.
For years, Ein Gev, on the
shores of the Kinneret, has
held its annual Passover
music festival. Both are ma-
