ligl4UNTEERS FOR ISRAEL

gate announced "Cimetiere
Israelite."
= Set among the trees, the
stone markers in this
cemetery, maintained by the
city as one of four denomina-
tional burial grounds, date
back to the 16th century.
They are massive and ornate.
But the most striking sight is
• one corner, where two sim-
in
ple memorials have been
erected. As the French words
explain, one of these contains
an urn of ashes. The other
'holds a receptacle of soap
made from the remains of
Jews. Both are eloquent,
silent reminders that the
Jews of Nice do not forget the
painful chapter of their
history when virtually all the
city's Jews were deported.
But the visitor to Nice also
r-sees much evidence of the
, Jewish rebirth that began in
the 1960s when thousands of
I North African Sephardic
Jews settled here after
,› Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco
gained independence from
2rance.
Rabbi Joseph Pinson,
though not a Sephardic Jew,
is part of that renaissance.
"There's ..a big potential for
Jewish life in Nice," says the
rabbi, who was born in Paris,
educated at the Lubavitch
Yeshiva in Brooklyn and has
-lived in Nice since 1976.
Ever since then, he's been
busy spreading Yiddishkeit
along the Riviera. Now he
leads the way through a cour-
tyard and into the freshly
painted and modernized
Jewish day school that he and
his Bronx-born wife Sara,
direct. The place is alive with
activity. French-speaking
children sit in cheerful
classrooms. Later they eat
lunch in the courtyard of this
school which is head-
quartered in an old building
on narrow, winding Rue
Paganini. Enrollment in the
school keeps expanding, says
Pinson who directs a variety
of Jewish activities. He has
started Jewish summer day
camps in Nice and Cannes; a
winter ski camp and a
Chabad House. He also con-
ducts services in a small
Ashkenazi synagogue — all
this in a place mainly known
as a vacation resort.
"Tourism is a big part of life
in Nice," the energetic rabbi
acknowledges. "But that's an
advantage. With all the
visitors, here, Nice demon-
-, strates that Yiddishkeit can
be found everywhere, even in
a place where the focus is on
recreation and the sun!' 0
