"Listen to me," the old man
said. "You must listen to me."
Uzi and I took turns beat-
ing the boy while the lieu-
tenant and the old man
watched.
"Don't know," he mumbled.
"Don't know."
It was possible that he was
telling the truth, but we had
less than an hour left, and we
had to make sure. Uzi hit him
in the stomach once more
and then we both had the
same idea at the same time.
I had unconsciously
scratched the nape of my
neck with the muzzle of the
Beretta. The lieutenant, who
was yawning again, lowered
his hand, took a deep breath,
and straightened up. He
understood too.
"Shoot him," Uzi said in
Arabic.
I released the Beretta's
safety catch and aimed with
both hands at the lieutenant's
face. The old man grabbed the
barrel, and I was so surprised,
I let go. The lieutenant
jumped to the right, toward
the window, but was off
balance, and landed on his
knees. The first round, which
hit his chest, spun him
around, and threw him on his
back. Then the old man
walked over and shot him in
the right eye.
The boy cried, "Yah Allah!"
— "Oh God!" — and told us
what we wanted to know.
Uzi took notes on a pad of
yellow paper. The old man
gave me back the gun, and
said, "Let the blood be on
my head. I don't matter.
But you were born here.
Take care! The Holy One,
blessed be He, has given
your generation the Land
of Israel. Be worthy of His
gift. Keep your hands
clean."
