FRIENDS OF THE ISRAEL DEFENSE FORCES IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES YOU CAN HELP "It made me more compas- sionate," he now says. "It made me more understanding of the conditions that prevail when you are under hostile scrutiny. "Maybe I became — maybe not kinder — but maybe a lit- tle more compassionate!" Wallace has no compassion for those news programs to- day that seek sensationalism over substance. "It's all a question of heat and light," he contends. "If you're only after the heat, au- diences will understand that. They will know if a story is being done only for sensa- tionalism." Wallace is very much the sensation in an industry of leading lights. He has won a numer of Emmy Awards, in- cluding an honor for his repott on "The Nazi Connec- tion," revealing the role this courny has played in helping Nazi war criminals elude justice. Indeed, Wallace's bio brims with awards and honorary degrees, including one from the University of Penn- sylvania last month. In a career that dates back to the 1940s, when he served as a radio writer/broadcaster, Wallace would seem primed for some time off from his prime-time schedule. And while "60 Minutes" is adding two correspondents — Steve Kroft and Meredith Vieira — next season, partial- ly in response to the loss of co- editor Diane Sawyer, don't ex- pect to hear Wallace ask for a lightened load. He is not afraid of hard work or hard questions. "There aren't any more hard questions for me," he says. "So," with a wink and a playful tap, he shoots, "fire away.'-' Aliyah May Double Jerusalem (JTA) — Im- migration to Israel from ec- onomically troubled Argen- tina is likely to double in the months ahead, according to Deputy Premier David Levy, who just returned from a vis- it to Buenos Aires.
