travellers in Israel. Follow-
ing the murder of Sasportas,
the towns of Ashkelon and
Ashdod fired Arab workers
as a safety precaution-,
replacing them with high
school students or Ethiopian
immigrants; and in Petach
Tikvah, near Tel Aviv, a
special terminal was con-
structed after Jewish citi-
zens complained that they
were afraid of Palestinian
laborers wandering through
their neighborhoods.
Demands to limit Arab ac-
cess to Israel come from both
the left and the right. Last
spring, Likud Transport
Minister Moshe Katzav ad-
vocated a four-month ban on
Palestinian workers in Isra-
el as a punitive measure. Af-
ter the latest attack on bus
405, dovish Member of
Knesset Haim Ramon of La-
bor called on the govern-
ment to require Palestinians
to obtain visas for entry into
Israel. Ramon explained his
proposal as an effort both "to
of the territories from Isra-
el."
Despite such demands,
Arabs and Jews still mingle
freely in Israeli cities. But
there is a palpable sense of
mutual suspicion and fear.
"The Arabs today, when you
pass them on the street they
look at you with murder in
their eyes," said a lawyer
from the northern town of
Nahariyah.
In the wake of the latest
attack on bus 405, officials
here are promising new se-
curity measures, including
the installation of bullet
proof glass partitions for bus
drivers. But few Israelis be-
lieve that such devices, no
matter how sophisticated,
can provide real safety. "The
Arab they caught was wear-
ing a skullcap," said a Jeru-
salem cabdriver named Avi,
who often plies the same
route taken by bus number
405. "That's scary. All they
have to do is put on a
yarlmuke and we can't tell
them from us."
Not all Israelis are scared.
Following a round of televi-
sion and radio appearances,
Eliazer Elsheikh, Israel's
newest and most improbable
war hero, went back to his
modest Jerusalem apart-
ment, where he drank a
le'chaim with his family and
friends, and retold the story
of how he saved a bus full of
people.
"Weren't you afraid?"
asked a reporter.
"Of course not," said
Elsheikh. "I'm a former
combat soldier. And God
gave me courage." ❑
