Special help for moms-to-be.

But Will cited four recent
PLO statements that sug-
gest the contrary:
• Six months ago, Arafat
"reaffirmed the PLO goal of
the 'complete liberation of
the Palestinian soil and the
establishment of a Palestin-
ian state over every part of
it.' "
• Five months ago, the
head of the PLO's political
department said recovering
part of what had been Pales-
tine will not deter the PLO
from recovering all of it:
"We shall pitch our tent in
those places which our
bullets can reach... This tent
shall then form the base
from which we shall later
pursue the next phase."
This was echoed three
months ago by the leader of
the PLO's second largest fac-
tion.
• Last month, the Fatah
conference in Tunis reaf-
'firmed that the 1948 parti-
tion of Palestine was a
"crime."
Yet, Will worries that Ara-
fat will get a visa: "The
Bush administration, which
is relentlessly and some-
times obnoxiously eager to
underscore the obvious —
that it is not the Reagan
administration — may well
pick up where the Reagan
administration left off in ap-
peasing the Palestine Liber-
ation Organization..."

Tom Friedman's
College Days

Few of us want to be held
h ostage to our undergradu-
ate days, but that is what
Jerold Auerbach and Irving
Moskowitz are doing to Tom
Friedman of the New York
Times and author of the
best-seller, From Beirut to
Jerusalem.
In letters sent to a number
of Jewish newspapers
around the country, Auer-
bach and Moskowitz attempt
to discredit the reporting
Friedman did for 10 years as
the Times' correspondent in
Beirut and Jerusalem and
the general texture of his re-
cently published book.
Auerbach is a history profes-
sor at Wellesley College and
Moskowitz is on the board of
directors of the Americans
f or a Safe Israel.
Their very similar letters
denounce Friedman for sign-
ing a letter that appeared in
the Brandeis university stu-
dent newspaper in November
1974. ❑
