has produced more than one-
quarter of all Nobel science
prizewinners. Consider,
perhaps, that something in
Judaism might possibly ex-
plain why. Jesus, Einstein,
Marx and Freud as well as
Ann Landers, Miss Manners
and Roseanne have roots in
Judaism. Could Isaiah's
"light unto the nations"
(49:6) actually be working?
Being tolerant of other
faiths doesn't require Jews to
be indifferent to them. The
Talmud, the Jewish oral law,
suggests that Israel's role
isn't to make the world
Jewish, but to teach the world
that people can be better. Ac-
cording to the Jewish Bible
and the radical monotheism,
proportional justice and
universal anti-cruelty itad-
vocated, the so-called seven
laws of Noah, will help make
them so.
The Talmud commands
Jews to- instruct the nations
in the biblical laws, the
Noahide code, which pertain
to all mankind. Belief in an
anti-God devil, religious con-
tempt for world matters, the
worship of saints — such ideas
violate the code, and impair,
according to Judaism,
humanity's potential.
Judaism requires Jews to
speak out in favor of the
teachings of their religion.
Perhaps the nations even
have a right to know the laws
that Judaism, Ibrah, applies
to the nations. Though the
Jews may present a welter of
competing voices, in speaking
about this or anything, they
should speak. Israel's future,
if nothing else, depends on
it. ❑
Arsonists Burn
Popular Forest
°
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A dense
pall of smoke hung over
Mount Carmel and the city
of Haifa on Tuesday, as a
giant forest fire attributed to
Palestinian arsonists raged
uncontrolled along the heav-
ily wooded mountain range.
At least nine people were
hospitalized for smoke in-
halation. None was reported
in danger.
Hundreds of firefighters,
police, soldiers and civilian
volunteers battled the blaze,
which was fanned by
50—mile—per—hour winds.
By unhappy coincidence,
Israel was struck Tuesday
by a Hamsin, the hot desert
wind.
Light planes were pressed
into service to pour water on
the fire from above, while
firefighters worked on the
ground.
