occur, a vulnerable aspect of
Solidarity that will readily be
held up to ridicule and attack
will be its relationship and
support of Jews. The stage
would then be set to purge
those few remaining Jews
who are still left in Poland.
Hopefully this scenario will
not be played out. However,
Polish anti-Semitism has the
tendency to repeat itself.
The irony of history is that
Poland's new government has
requested the help of a Jew.
Solidarity has asked Dr. Jef-
frey Sachs, a Harvard
economist, to help engineer
its transition to capitalism.
Obviously, this new govern-
ment is not concerned that
Dr. Sachs is Jewish. One
muses over how much unused
Jewish advice and aid lies
buried with Auschwitz's 21/2
million Jewish victims.

Recommended to readers of
Thomas Friedman's From
Beirut to Jerusalem (Jewish
News July 28) is Martin
Peretz' review in the New
Republic Sept. 4, in which he
is roundly critical of the
author's "misleading sym-
metry" in comparing Israel
and Lebanon, in suggesting
equivalency of behavior of
Israel and that of Syria and
Iraq, in more severe treat-
ment of Begin than Arafat.
Friedman's disillusionment
following the Lebanese inva-
sion was so personally shat-
tering he reacted by skewer-
ing Israel journalistically in
this unbalanced work.
Though the book is rife with
criticism of Israel, no
workable alternatives are
offered.
Friedman does establish (no
surprise to many of us) the
pro-PLO, anti Israel bias in
the reporting; Arafat forces
were received in a "huge
generally uncritical interna-
tional press corps, many of
those members identified
with the PLO as underdogs
and '60s-style revolu-
tionaries" resulting in
fabricated reports including
numbers of casualties.
Reporters catered to the
PLO because of fear and
"there was not a single
reporter in West Beirut who
did not feel intimidated . . ."
and Friedman does not ex-
clude himself!
And ". . the truth is, the
Western press coddled the
PLO and never judged it with
anywhere near the scrutiny
that it judged Israeli
behavior." (Sound familiar?
Currently how much media

coverage is given to the ac-
celerating numbers of Palesti-
nians being killed by fellow
Palestinians in Nablus . . . or
to charges that Fatah ac-
tivists are embezzling
millions of dollars . . . or that
some 25,000, for the most
part Shiites, are fleeing to
Lebanon thes3 days to seek
refuge in Israel's security
zone . . . or to date there is no
condemnation by the U.N. of
the slaughter of Lebanese by
Syrians?)

In your Sept. 8 Jewish
News, in the article on elder-
ly dating by Richard Pearl I
was misquoted in two ways.
First the quotation of death
and illness hovering over in-
dividuals was not one that I
would care to make or made.
In fact, I have a much more
optimistic outlook for our ag-
ing population.
The second part relates to
the medical incidence of im-
potence. Although this is a
common symptom with
diabetes and hormonal pro-
blems, these diseases are not
the most common causes of
impotence. In fact, hormonal
problems probably account
for probably less than five
percent of the total patients
presenting with impotence.

The Single Issue
And Carl Levin

I share your anxiety over
the endangered future of
Senator Carl Levin.
("Political Insiders Eyeing
Carl Levin" Sept. 8). However,
you do Levin no good service
by presenting him as a single
issue candidate.
You make it appear as
though Jews ought to vote
for him only because of his
unwavering candidate sup-
port for Israel. In so doing ,
you (implicitly) avoid the
kinds of problems we as Jews,
may encounter surrounding
". .. dual loyalties . . ." in the
event of possible future
significant conflicts of in-
terest between the United
States and Israel. (Unless you
wish to maintain that Israeli
and American interests can
never be in " . . . significant
conflict . . ." an obviously ab-
surd position.)
Also, your single issue pas-
sion tends to reinforce the
anti-Israel hostility of those
who claim that our loyalties
