Garden Room Opening In November

Nor does Feinstein ap-
preciate Linda Ronstadt's
performances of past stan-
dard hits. "I am bored by her
albums," he says of the pop ar-
tist. "I salute her for her in-
genuity," says Feinstein, who
admits he would rather listen
to the original recordings of
the tunes she covers.
When Feinstein wants to
cover up on a rainy day and
warm against the chill, he'll
slip on something romantic
like a Fred Astaire recording
or something by Peggy Lee or
maybe Tony Bennett. Liza
Minelli is a top favorite — pro-
' fessionally and personally.
I, She helped introduce him at
Hollywood parties.
Feinstein is no party
animal, however. He'd rather
1' just play the piano. "I've
always been a loner," he says.
"Being around a lot of people
can throw you off balance.
"As a kid, I was convinced
that I'd be alone the rest of
my life. Music has always
- been my companion."
Feinstein's date book cer-
tainly is filled. He is due to
record an album of previous-
ly unpublished Gershwin
music. He will be bringing his
hit show back to Broadway in
November. There is also the
possibility, says Feinstein, of
a movie musical with a good
part in it for him.
Then there's the television
special from London, a
December due date for an
album of songs by composer
Burton Lane — with Lane at
the piano and Feinstein sing-
ing — and a recent perfor-
mance at the White House.
It's very clear that Michael
Feinstein is here to stay. "I
guess people see how commit-
ted I am to my material. Peo-
ple appreciate my en-
thusiasm. I love what I do."
Life, admits Feinstein, is
delightful, delicious.
'S wonderful. ❑
