BACKGROUND: Larry Lawson grew up in Oak Park and attended public school. He enjoyed the area and has fond childhood memories. He recalls his home bar mitzvah and family vacations as highlights. One of his early interests was music. As- a teenager he played guitar and was part of the band Urban Renewal that performed at bar mitzvah and fraternity parties. As a high school senior, he was involved with a lampoon publication and enjoyed writing satirical sketches. Comedy writing then became a hobby. "I was influended by Steve Allen and Mad magazine?' When his friend became a disc jockey in Canada, Lawson sent him some material that was aired on the radio. After graduating Oak Park High School in 1965, he entered Wayne State University. Lawson decided to major in mass communications because he was certain that he wanted to be a physician and did not want to limit himself to only science courses. When Dick Purtan came to Detroit in the mid-60s, Lawson liked his sense of humor and sent Purtan some material. After a meeting, Lawson became the Storylady, a voice on Purtan's morning radio show. Purtan, Lawson and the Storylady have been together for 22 years. Today the Storylady and Purtan are on the radio station WKQI or Q95. Lawson describes the Storylady as michievous, who often has a nursery rhyme after a current event one-liner. Vintage Storylady lines are: "Boys and girls, if you have scruples, don't scratch them!' One commercial following the Storylady's words of wisdom is: "The Storylady is sponsored by the Storylady Muffler Co. Our guarantee is for five years or five days, whichever comes first!' Lawson's other voice on Purtan's program is Wendell Ledbetter, a befuddled man whose interpretations of current events or the Bible are off-color in a humorous manner. When Lawson is not writing comedy or reading X-rays, he enjoys vacationing with his family. "I went to Israel last year and that was a real peak!' TIDBITS RABBI DIAMOND Rabbi Chuck Diamond opened the Congregation Shaarey Zedek school year with a bang, dressed in gangster -attire and accompanied by suspect characters. This unusual arrival captivated the audience and created excitement among the parents and students. Students Amy Kelman, P.J. Cherrin, Lonni Meyers
