He approached the rabbis
of both Budapest congrega-
tions as well as Lajos Bakos,
the managing vice president
of the Central Board of
Hungarian Jews.
Meanwhile, he continued to
consult with the two. Israeli
scribes, who advised him not
to buy any Sefer lbrah other
than the ones from lbkay.
"They told me they were all
non-kosher and I would be
wasting my money," he says.
Dafne tried desperately to
buy one of the Tbkay scrolls,
but was unable to do so. In-
stead, he had to settle for
another lbrah that belonged
to a collection of "survivors"
from Hungarian Jewish com-
munities that had been
destroyed. He examined the
Tbrah, found it to be in
relatively good condition,
paid $2,300 and brought it
home to Jerusalem.
In Israel, it cost him
another $1,500 to repair the
flaws in the scroll. He con-
tinues to have difficulty get-
ting it fully repaired because
it is riddled with a thousand
errors, such as broken letters,
attached letters and, in some
cases, wrong letters (for ex-
ample, an aleph appears in-
stead of an ayin in the word
"im," changing the meaning
from "with" to "if.")
But for all the aggravation
and expense, Dafne does not
regret having travelled to
Hungary to purchase his
Tbrah. In four trips, he
learned about Hungarian
Jewry and even discovered a
Bible prodigy who went on to
become one of the winners of
the International Bible Con-
test in Jerusalem.
He learned that the Hun-
garian authorities are more
liberal today and allow
freedom of worship, though
many elderly Jews still
remember the revolution of
1956 and live in fear (many
are not circumcised for this
reason).
There is assimilation
among the young, he says,
but at the same time — at
least in the Conservative
synagogue — there is a revi-
val of interest in Jewish life.
A total of 140 Hungarian
lbrah scrolls were brought to
Israel this past summer: 100
were buried, and 40 are being
repaired for continued, use.
Dafne would like the govern-
ment of Israel, in coordina-
tion with the Hungarian
authorities, to allow any Jews
to go to Hungary to purchase
scrolls.
"For the sale of the 600,000
who were killed in the Holo-
caust, these scrolls should be
bought by Jews who will put
them to use in their com-
munities," he says.
Rabbi Gold notes that the
Tbrah is often compared to
human beings. Both are
buried when lifeless, and one
who sees a lbrah being des-
troyed is required to tear his
garment just as he would if
he were present at the death
of a loved one.
"This Tbrah represents the
remnants of a living Jewry,"
Rabbi Gold says. "The fact
that it made its way to Jeru-
salem is most representative
of the Jewish people, for
that's where we are all
headed." 111
Bible - Champion
Yisrael Davidovitch lives
several hundred kilometers
from Budapest, the major
Jewish center in Hungary.
His town has no Jewish
schools, so he studied
Hebrew by correspondence
with teachers from Buda-
pest and -learned Bible on
his own.
He happened to be visit-
ing his grandfather in
Budapest, when Avraham
Dafne was in town shopping
for a Torah. When he was in-
troduced as a teenager with
an interest in Bible, Dafne,
a former Bible teacher,
couldn't resist testing him.
Dafne was shocked by the
youngster's knowledge.
"He was phenomenal.
And he spoke in near-perfect
HebreW. When I got back to
Israel I reported to the
Jewish Agency about this
young Bible prodigy in
Hungary and they said 'Get
him here for the Interna-
tional Bible Contest!' "
Dafne says.
Dafne contacted the boy
and the Jewish Agency
made the arrangements.
Dafne spent six hours
studying with the young-
ster, who survived the gruel-
ing pace of the contest
without missing a single
question. He won the max-
imum points, and Yisrael
Davidovitch, a teenager
from Hungary, became the
runner-up champion for
Diaspora youth in the 1987
International Bible.Contest.
