Why pay what the Marriott charges for a room these days and settle for just a room? Especially when the Embassy Suites Southfield has so much to offer. EMBASSY SUITES SOUTHFIELD GIVES YOU: THEY GIVE YOU: 1. A single room. The Shoah haunts the German-born Gina Blumen- feld, too. The daughter of two survivors, her one-hour film, In Dark Places, juxtaposes in- terviews with survivors and their children with newsreel footage, historical analysis by Susan Sontag and scenes from plays concerned with Jewish identity staged by the New Artef Players of Los Angeles. Blumenfeld is now planning a project in stage and film that will bring together, in dialogue, Ger- mans, Austrians and Jews of the second generation. Aviva Kempner, whose mother was a Holocaust sur- vivor, abandoned her goal of becoming a lawyer to raise funds for films about causes that interested her. That led her to produce the highly ac- claimed documentary, Par- tisans of Vilna, which consists of interviews with women and men who tried to resist the Nazis in the Vilna ghetto. The film will be shown na- tionally on the Public Braod- casting Service sometime bet- ween Aug. 29 and Sept. 3. A need to know who, and what and why, and to pass on that knowledge also seems to drive the Jewish woman film- maker interested in other aspects of Jewish history and culture. "My husband's grand- parents were involved in this and I felt a need to capture on film something about these people whose lives were so unique," explained Marlene Booth of Raananah: A World of Our Own, a 28-minute film. It tells the unusual story of a socialist Jewish colony in upstate New York. "I'm a mother and a teacher, and I feel a duty to give children a legacy, their history and a sense of who they are," she said. Booth followed that project by teaming with Linda Mat- chin, a Boston Globe reporter, to make a documentary about The Jewish Daily Forward for the now-weekly Yiddish newspaper's 100th anniver- sary. The film drew an en- thusiastic response from a Museum of Modern Art au- dience last season, and was picked to open the Jewish Film Festival in San Fran- cisco in July. Family life is the inspira- tion for many women film- makers. For Mary Halawani, who came here from Egypt with her family in 1962, her grandmother was an ap- propriate focus.
