stamp together with the Blue
Box and Zion stamps. These
stamps appeared with an
Austrian stamp -to celebrate
the occasion, each stamped
with the official Austrian
postage seal.
In the past year, a JNF
stamp exhibition was hosted
in Paris, to mark the dedica-
tion of the reconstructed Vic-
toire Synagogue. Special
covers and postcards, bearing
a French postage stamp
depicting a dove of peace over
the synagogue were issued.
Exhibitions were also held
in Zurich, Basel and 1bl-onto
(devoted to Zion, the JNF and
Judaism). A special "Mystical
Echoes" from the Holocaust
exhibition was also held in
Warsaw, to commemorate the
45th anniversary of the War-
saw Ghetto uprising, and a
first day cover was published
on April 15, 1988, depicting a
"Zachor" (Remembrance),
stamp and a 40th anniver-
sary stamp alongside a "Yad
Vashem" postage seal.
This "elevation" of the
stamp into an art form wor-
thy of exhibition shows that it
is not only to the philatelist
that JNF stamps are increas-
ing in value, but to the
general public, too, who see
their worth as innovative
chronicles of Zionist ,
history. ❑

Mikvah, Bakery
Are Unearthed

Jerusalem (JTA) — Con-
struction workers excavating
for a housing project in Safed
recently unearthed a rare ar-
chaeological find, the
Ministry of Construction and
Housing reported.
The workers uncovered a
mikvah (ritual bath) that
served residents of the old ci-
ty of Safed about 400 years
ago. They also found traces of
a bakery that operated
underneath the bathhouse.
