New York — The American
Jewish Committee and the
Anti-Defamation League
have joined in alerting travel
agents and tour groups that
the 1990 Oberammergau Pas-
sion Play still contains anti-
Jewish material that has
been criticized by Roman
Catholic authorities as well
as Jewish groups.
According to Rabbi A.
James Rudin, director of
AJC's department of inter-
religious affairs, and Rabbi
Leon Klenicki, director of
ADL's department of inter-
faith affairs, despite
asurances by the play's pro-
ducers that they would
remove some of this material,
the basic text "remains fun-
damentally flawed and is a
major transmitter of harsh
and diviive anti-Jewish
attitudes.
"It must be viewed," they
added, "with an awareness
that its anti-Jewish elements
do not represent contem-
porary Christian thinking.
The play is not in accordance
with the teachings of the Se-
. cond _Vatican Council or of
subsequent Catholic guide-
lines on Passion plays."
Guidelines for evaluating
the Oberammergau pageant
and other Passion plays are
available from ADL, AJC,
and the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops.
The Oberammergau play is
given every 10 years and is
the world's most heavily at-
tended Passion play, drawing
hundreds of thousands of
tourists to the small Bavarian
village of Oberammergau.
First produced in 1634, it cur-
rent employs a text written in
the 19th century. Christian
and Jewish critics alike have
pointed to anti-Jewish
elements in the text itself as
well as in the staging and
costumes used -in recent pro
ductions. (For example, some
Jewish characters have been
portrayed as having horns.)
Representatives of AJC and
ADL have met with Oberam-
mergau officials several times
over the years to discuss the
play and request changes —
some of which have been
made, but without substan-
tively changing the anti-
Jewish quality of the play.
Most recently, in May, 1989,
a delegation representing the
two Jewish groups and an
American interreligious
dialogue group met with
Oberammergau leaders to
discuss the 1990 production,
which will run from May to
September. Rabbi Rudin
represented AJC; Dr. Leonard
