Michael Ilitch
dent of the Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame and is
presented annually to an in-
dividual for outstanding con-
tributions to sports and
athletics in Michigan, said
James F. Grossman, Hall of
Fame secretary.
Ilitch "has always loved
sports, both as a participant
and as a fan," said Grossman.
"He has always contributed
to sports, from the time when
he was starting out in the ear-
ly 1960s with just one or two
pizza shops. His involvement
with professional sports isn't
the reason for his selection by
the Hall's board of governors."
Ilitch is owner of the National
Hockey League Detroit Red
Wings team. •
Grossman said more than
50,000 young people par-
ticipate in Little Caesars-
sponsored teams and leagues
in the United States, Canada
and England in indoor and
outdoor soccer, baseball,
hockey, softball - and
basketball.
Past Foon Award recipients
are Don Canham, former
University of Michigan
athletic director, and Ernie
Harwell, Detroit Tigers
broadcaster.
Inductees to the Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame will be
Mike Yellen, raquetball
champion; the late Lou
Handler, a former boxing
referee; and the late Jake
Mazer, a state basketball
pioneer.
Television sportscaster Eli
Zaret will be master of
ceremonies and comedian
Jack Carter will speak.
