First Fruits Continued from preceding page Adat Shalom Synagogue A Conservative Congregation first-fruit ceremony that everything is a gift, during the seder night we come to understand that our children, our first-fruits, are also a gift from God. We are not the owners. And the message is that children cannot be con- trolled or coerced; they must be taught and inspired — as we witness at the seder. The generations survive, and I'm sure that this is in no small measure because of many such dialogues between parents and children. Only last week an opportunity arose to attend a nets re'vaii ceremony here in Efrat, and along with other neighbors, after the redemption with a coin and a blessing, we tasted the sweet grapes from the new vines. Even a city boy like me could feel that we were moving closer to the day when we'd again be bringing our first-fruits to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. May it be speedily and in our time. ❑ SYNAGOGUES 1 Shaarey Zedek Shows 'Tevye' "*"--","' • ," For Membership Information Call Alan Yost, 851-5100 A new restored version of the 1939 Yiddish film classic Tevye by .Sholom Aleichem will be shown at Congrega- tion Shaarey Zedek 9:30 p.m. Sept. 23 as a prelude to Selichot services, which will be held at 11:30 p.m. Tevye, starring and directed by the dean of Yiddish theatre, Maurice Schwartz, was the base for the Broad- way musical Fiddler on The Roof The new release by the Na- tional Center for Jewish Film marks 50 years since Tevye was first released.
