Dr. Aphrodite J. Clamar, a Manhattan psychotherapist, suggested that children whose parents come from dif- ferent religious backgrounds "cannot grow up with a clear sense of religious identity if they are not fully at home in either the mother's or father's faith." Lydia Kukoff, director of the Reform movement's outreach program for intermarried couples, warned of a tenden- cy among parents to "choose everything for their children except their religion. "The reluctance of mixed couples to decide on one faith for their child, or their an- nouncement that they will `expose the child to both faiths and let the child decide,' masks a dangerous am- bivalence," she added. "And it places the child in the ex- tremely difficult position of choosing one parent over the other." The suspect, identified only as a 20-year-old resident of the West Bank town of Ramallah, led police to the body of the man he said he killed "because he was a Jew: ' The corpse was concealed in a large'pipe at a construction site on the Tel Aviv beachfront, where the Arab and his victim shared duties as night watchman. The slain man was iden- tified as Michael Ashtamker, 38, the divorced father of three children. The confessed killer was ar- rested Saturday night after stabbing the driver of a Jerusalem-bound Egged bus, Shlomo Assor, in the stomach and chest, in an apparent at- tempt to wreck the vehicle. He was foiled by Assor, who, despite his wounds, halted the bus before it left the road. Enraged passengers swiftly overpowered the Arab and held him for the police.
