BLOOMFIELD 855.5822 AJCommittee Plans To Quit Organization New York (JTA) — In a highly controversial move, the American Jewish Committee informed members of the In- ternational Jewish Commit- tee for Interreligious Con- sultations last week of its in- tention to withdraw from the organization. Other member groups said AJCorarnittee's action will seriously threaten the cause of Jewish unity in the midst of the dispute with the Polish Catholic Church over the Carmelite convent at Auschwitz. AJCommittee made the an- nouncement after the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported last Thursday that an alter- native organization to IJCIC is being planned by AJCom- mittee, the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith and the American Jewish Con- gress. Neither ADL nor AJCongress is currently a member of IJCIC. Organizations who are IJCIC members are now strongly urging AJCommit- tee to reconsider its decision. "It is harmful to Jewish in- terests — indeed, some might call it a piece of insanity — to tear apart the Jewish com- munity and choose the path of disunity at any time," said Seymour Reich, president of B'nai B'rith International. Reich, who is also chairman of the -Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, called on ADL, AJCongress and AJCommittee "to step back from the brink and reconsider the effects of any such action." Rabbi Alexander Schindler, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congrega- tions, said that "to advertise our differences is to reveal our weakness!' Schindler said that division among Jews "can only play into the hands of those in the Catholic Church who seek to renege on the commitment to remove the Carmelite con- vent from Auschwitz!' But Rabbi James Rudin, who is both director of inter- religious affairs for the American Jewish Committee and the current chairman of IJCIC, defended his organiza- tion's decision to leave. "The Jewish community is very pluralistic and this just reflects the pluralism," Rudin said. The new group "will enrich and strengthen the Jewish dialogue universally!' Rudin dismissed -criticism that the decision hampers Jewish unity during the crisis over the Auschwitz convent. A crisis often "brings out new configurations that can be very enriching," he said. Rudin's status as chairman of IJCIC after the AJCoramit- tee's announcement is now in doubt. Elan Steinberg, executive director for the World Jewish Congress, said that his group has informed the IJCIC secretariat that it no longer considers Rudin chairman of IJCIC, since AJCommittee has announced its intention to withdraw. • WJC Charges Convent Violates UNESCO Rules New York (JTA) — The World Jewish Congress has convinced the director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization that the Carmelite convent in Auschwitz is a violation of the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Na- tional Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972, reported WJC Vice President Kalman Sultanik, who participated in the meeting in Paris. Poland ratified that convention in 1976. Auschwitz was added to the World Heritage List in 1979 by a proposal of both the World Jewish Congress and Poland. WJC Vice President Sultanik reported that UNESCO Director General Federico Mayor Zaragoza agreed with their complaint and transmitted it to the organization's World Heritage Committee, composed of the signatories to the convention and charged with upholding it. The World Heritage Com- mittee is now going to in- vestigate the matter and report back to UNESCO. "Under terms of the UNESCO convention, Poland is obligated to ensure that the character of the Auschwitz site is not altered. The establishment of the convent five years after the designa- tion of Auschwitz as a pro- tected site is a flagrant viola- tion of the UNESCO conven- tion," Sultanik said. a •
