WAS DOUBLE REBATE $15,317 $2000 9012,370 * $9995* W Nile planning our non-violent protest against the Carmelite convent located at the Auschwitz death camp where three million Jews had been annihilated, we were re- assured by State Department officials in Washington and by journalists in Warsaw that with Solidarity on the rise and the liberalization of Poland, there was little chance we would be attacked by the local citizenry. The target of our demon- stration, the Carmelite con- vent, is located in the build- ing that had been used to store the canisters of Zyklon B gas used by the Nazis to carry out their program of mass killings. The convent was established in 1984 when a group of nuns took over the building at the entrance to the camp. The nuns occupied the building in violation of the 1972 United Nations Conven- tion for the Protection of the World Cultural and National Heritage. This agreement was designed to-preserve in- tact sites of ourstanding cultural and national in- terest. Auschwitz, including the building occupied by the nuns, is on the World Heritage List. Moreover, faced with moun- ting protest against the loca- tion of a convent at a site so bitterly emblematic of the greatest calamity that befell the Jewish people, Roman Catholic representatives met in 1987 with Jewish leaders in Geneva and signed an ac- cord providing for the removal of the Carmelite convent no later than February 22, 1989. The deadline has passed. The DOUBLE REBATE $1200 NEW '89 BERETTA 2 DR. 2.0L eng., auto, air, cruise, tilt, int. wipers, aux. lighting, r. defrost and more! Auschwitz Editor's Note: Seven American Jews staged a protest at the convent at Auschwitz this summer, touching off an international controversy that continues. Here, their leader explains his version of the incident and why the group went. Rabbi Weiss convent has not been relocated. Instead, it is being refurbished; a 24-foot high cross has been erected in an adjacent area; and the nuns, claiming, according to news reports, to be praying for "the four million victims of Auschwitz, most of whom were Jewish," are more en- trenched than ever. • Our small group approach- ed the fence surrounding the convent, rang the bell, and declared that we had come in peace. We asked that the con- vent be moved. When our at- tempts at opening a dialogue were ignored, we scaled the fence, wrapped ourselves in our prayer shawls, and sang and studied 'Ibrah on the con- vent porch. We did not regard ourselves as trespassers. In the most tragic and unwanted way, Auschwitz has become Jewish — ours. It is a Jewish cemetery; the bones and ashes of Jews are strewn across its grounds to this very day. Soon after we began our peaceful demonstration, workers from inside the con- vent threw buckets of water mixed with urine and paint over our heads. A small crowd gathered outside the fence to mock and jeer. Several hours later, the workers attacked us Continued on Page 14
