HOMETOWN HITS

Birmingham Bead Store also sees the
ethnic themes in jewelry.
Leather dressing is popular this
season in a wide array of colors. There
are even leather earrings to match out-
fits available at Ceci Orman in Farm-
ington Hills.
The Chanel influence is as big this
year as last year. But American
designers are making great inroads in
couture, and there's new talent in
American design. Besides the "old
guard" like Bill Blass and Geoffrey
Beene, names to watch are Charlotte
Neuville and Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis.
Evening turns glamorous in black
cocktail dresses with gold lame accents.
"Black and gold combination is strong,"
says Rita Goldstone, a buyer at Sherri's.
Goldstone also mentions that strapless
dresses are still in vogue. Sherri's also
has evening dresses with faux and real
fur trim and a complete line of dressy
suits.

There's a strong back-to-the future
theme in fashion now, with designers
drawing on the best of nostalgia, par-
ticularly the fashions and jewelry of the
1950s, to provide a new edge and sense
of fun.
1950s glamour is easy to attain by
wearing several key items and projec-
ting the "right" attitude.
Here's all you'll need:
1.Movie star sunglasses: Cats-eye or
wrap-around frames in black or tortoise
shell provide the right amount of
intrigue.

2. Oversized 14K gold hoop earrings:
The 1980s woman goes for the real
thing, and the bigger, the better. Best
bets include classic doorknocker hoops,
thin wires and multiple dangles.
3. A chiffon scarf: This is the ac-
cessory. Perfect for headwraps, (think
of Audrey Hepburn) or to be tossed over
the shoulders and secured with a
graphic gold pin. Chiffon adds a soft
touch but is big on drama.
4. "Charming" gold jewelry is hot:
Look for nostalgic charm bracelets with
dangling gold stars, moons or a single
heart. Also enjoying a renaissance —
gold ankle bracelets. A simple strip of
gold chain or linkage sets off a golden
tan beautifully.
5. Clear, red lipstick: Adds a
refreshing touch in shades from mango
to crimson to magenta.
