Stein Eriksen says that it is not un- common for both men and women skiers to have 10 outfits in their war- drobe. Skiwear styles range from one- piece jumpsuits to sporty separates. When skiers opt for the separates, it's usually a parka or oversized top with stretch pants. Skiers tend to dress differently depending on where they live and ski. In the east, the skiers dress conser- vatively compared to the west coast. "The East is rougher — less sunny and colder," noted Schwamb. The West Coast has more options to dressing, while on the East Coast function is a top priority. It's not just mom and dad who have many outfits. Kids' fashions are also important. Erikson's eight-year-old son, Bjorn, enjoys dressing fashionably There is no dress code on the slopes. on the slopes, too. "My son wants to look like me," says Eriksen. Sometimes the Eriksens wear matching outfits. This season Kaelin Ski introduces the Kaelin kids' collection, with the fashionable lines similar to adults'. Layering clothes is the key to stay- ing warm while skiing. But this year there is a revolutionary fabric called Solar Alpha. Solar Alpha, developed by Unitika of Japan, contains microscopic bits of zirconium carbide, which enables the fabric to absorb solar power and con- vert it into thermal energy. "It takes the sun's rays and heats the fabric," explains Schwamb of Bogner. Both Bogner and Kaelin will use Solar Alpha this season. Carolyn Mills, merchandise manager and buyer for Don Thomas Sporthaus, purchased many of the theme outfits in addition to clothes with interesting details and textures. "Skiwear doesn't go out of style, but every year they come up with something you can't resist," says Mills. Whether the outfit is new or old, the skier still has the opportunity to wear a fantasy outfit on the glistening slopes. Willy Bogner Jr., chief executive officer of all Bogner operations, sums up ski fantasies on his promotional video of the company: "You can let your fantasy run free."
