What's new in fine jewelry is old —
more specifically, ancient.
Jewelers of America, Inc. (JA), the
national organization dedicated to con-
sumer information and education about
fine jewelry, reports one of the hottest
"new" trends is the lush, old, historic
looks categorized as "Byzantine,"
"Medieval" or "Celtic."
This is accomplished by designers
using matte-finished high karat gold or
sterling silver that has been scrolled,
beaded, twisted or stamped to create
designs with a historical flavor. Interest
is added with polished metal contrasts
and/or accents of emerald, ruby,
amethyst or tourmaline cabochon-cut
gemstones.
Other fine jewelry news and trends
for '89 are as follows:
• Neckwear — Choker lengths are
still enormously popular, especially in
karat gold but with fancier, sometimes
open or stamped links. Beads and
pearls look best in longer lengths, and
are combined with gold chain for the
Chanel appeal. Beads are now combin-
ing different colors, shapes and textures
together in one piece.
• Wristwear — Variations on the
theme is the story for tennis bracelets,
updated with fancy diamonds, and
featuring more gold. Bangles are back,
this time with or without gemstones
and diamonds. Also, look for "semi-
rigid" styles resembling cuffs when
closed. Nostalgia from the '50s brings
back the charm bracelet.
• Rings — Still bold but not huge,
rings feature large colored gemstone
centers framed in diamonds or gold,
and asymmetrical styles with sweeps of
diamonds and gems. Also important are
channel-set baguette diamonds, fancy-
shaped diamonds and more colored
gemstones.
• Earrings — Still hot are hoops,
some with gems. Look, too, for open-
work gold and filigree designs for big
impact at smaller prices. On-the-ear
styles will have gently curving shapes
to replace the large, ribbed designs of
the past.
• Pins — Still popular are the classics
of yesteryear — bars, circles, flowers —
as well as novelties — insects (yes!),
animals, figurative designs. Diamond
accents are distinctive. Romantics will
seek out cameos, filigree. Deco and Art
Nouveau looks of original or reproduced
antiques.
