In fox, silver fox remains the favorite
but coming on strong is a new color
called Golden Island, a light ivory
background with pumpkin-colored
highlights.
While the most popular style in lynx
remains the basic long coat, the fur was
also shown in the swing coat style.
"People who buy lynx have to realize it's
a fragile fur," Blye says. "You can't wear
it every day."
Although it's the most expensive fur,
sable this year was shown in several
youthful, sporty styles such as bathrobe
coats, swing coats and short bolero
jackets as well as the traditional long
coat.
While lynx, fox and sable are familiar
to consumers, two furs are making in-
roads among buyers as they become
better known. The first, tanuki
(Japanese raccoon), has "beautiful
natural markings," says Blye, and is
becoming popular with first-time buyers
for the same reasons as raccoon and
beaver.
The second is nutria, which is more
popular in the sheared than the un-
sheared version. "Because it's warm, it
is often used in the lining of tweed or
poplin coats," she says. On its own, it
is often dyed and/or stenciled; for ex-
ample, one collection featured a black
and red plaid nutria coat.
In men's furs, the styling remains the
same. "Men's furs are very classic. They
don't change from year to year," Blye
says. Men tend to prefer flat-haired furs,
with mink and sheared nutria the two
top sellers. Popular styles are the duf-
fle coat, the Chesterfield coat, and the
bomber jacket (leather exterior, fur lin-
ing and collar).

new possibility for shaping knits
through the use of Lycra, quilting and
heavy stitch. This is a "younger," more
daring look with emphasis on sculpted
form and a lack of decoration and orn-
amentation.
Shoulders are softer, more natural as
shoulder pads continue to decline in im-
portance. Color is muted in tonal corn-
binations, and the yarns are lambswool
and alpaca, light but bulky 5- and 7-ply
